The course covers

This online Dental Nurse course is designed to prepare students for the NEBDN Diploma in Dental Nursing and subsequent registration with the General Dental Council (GDC). Students who are enrolled into the course will primarily be based within their own workplace and will only attend the Dental Team Education Centre for the face to face induction.

The vast majority of the course is taught online via the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). The online course consistently produces pass rates well above the national average and has high student satisfaction rates.

There are a maximum of 15 places on this course.

How the course is delivered

The course consists of online theoretical training through our Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), which supports the students workplace learning. Online training includes:

  • Learning materials
  • Exam-Style Modular assessments
  • Continual tutor support
  • Support for workplace mentors.

You must be sufficiently fluent in written and spoken English to communicate effectively with patient, their relatives, the dental team, and other healthcare professionals (GDC Standards for the Dental Team, 2:1.2).

Student needs are initially assessed during an Individual Training Plan discussion.  This will be completed during the induction day and will help staff identify students who may need additional support throughout the course.

The course also includes three compulsory training sessions:

  • Initial Induction (Face-to-face)
  • Mock exam 1 (Online)
  • Mock exam 2 (Online)

Entry requirements

  • Students must be employed as a Trainee Dental Nurse before enrolling onto the course
  • A workplace GDC Supervising Registrant (mentor)
  • Your workplace GDC Supervising Registrant (mentor) must attend the initial induction with you, and must be in a position to spend time supporting your learning throughout the course and liaise with the course tutor. This may be a Dental Care Professional
  • A GDC registered professional within the workplace who are willing to act as witnesses to your performance during completion of your Portfolio of Evidence.  Each witness will need to complete a Witness Training Programme prior to observing any performance.
  • Access to assist in a range of general dentistry clinical procedures as outlined in the Portfolio of Evidence requirements.
  • A computer or laptop to complete online activity.
  • Internet connection
  • Self motivation

Assessment

To gain the qualification you will need to:

  • Complete all End of Module assessments on the VLE
  • Successfully complete and pass the NEBDN Portfolio of Evidence to document your clinical knowledge, skills and competence
  • Achieve a pass in the NEBDN Knowledge Test
  • Achieve a pass in the NEBDN Scenario Based Professional Discussion

Any applications received with missing documents will not be processed and will be returned directly to applicant.  

You will receive a confirmation email of receipt of your application up to 3 working days from submission.

Further information

Candidates who fail the examination will continue to be supported by the DTEC team at no extra cost until a date agreed with your tutor.  NEBDN however will charge a resit examination fee.  Details of fees payable are available on the NEBDN website (www.nebdn.org).  These fees are to be paid to DTEC in the first instance and are then forwarded to NEBDN.

Candidates who choose to / or are required to defer entry to the examination will continue to be supported by the DTEC team at no extra cost until a date agreed with your tutor.  NEBDN however will charge a deferral fee.  Details of fees payable are available on the NEBDN website (www.nebdn.org).  These fees are to be paid to DTEC in the first instance and are then forwarded to NEBDN.

It is important to note that if for any reason you are unable to sit the Knowledge Test or Professional Discussion on the date scheduled, you will be required to pay a £35 NEBDN deferral fee to defer to another exam date. The NEBDN allow for 1 deferral only. Any other deferrals made will be counted as an exam attempt.

For the first part of the exams – Knowledge Test, Please note: if a deferral is requested/required within 4 weeks of the Knowledge Test, the NEBDN charge a late-deferral fee of £150), or if you fail to attend or are unsuccessful in passing the Knowledge Test, NEBDN will automatically enter you onto the next available exam date and a re-sit fee of £150 will be payable by you.

NEBDN allow 3 attempts to pass the Knowledge Test, if unsuccessful after this, you will need to start the course again.

For the second part of the exams – Professional Discussion, Please note: if a deferral is requested/required within 4 weeks of the Professional Discussion, the NEBDN charge a late-deferral fee of £300), or if you fail to attend or are unsuccessful in passing the Professional Discussion, NEBDN will automatically enter you onto the next available exam date and a re-sit fee of £300 will be payable by you.

NEBDN allow 3 attempts to pass the Professional Discussion, if unsuccessful after this, you will need to start the course again.
